The Benefits of Probiotics

When we think of bacteria, we usually associate it with being negative. What most people don’t realize though is that our body requires beneficial or “good” bacteria that is important for a healthy digestion and immune system. This “good” bacteria is known as probiotics.

The word probiotic comes from the Greek word pro, meaning “promoting,” and biotic, meaning “life.” Probiotics are found in our bodies naturally but can also be found in foods and supplements. In order for probiotics to be beneficial to us, there has to be a proper balance of them in our bodies. About 80 percent of our immune system is in our gastrointestinal tract, the more the bacteria is balanced, the healthier you will be. The optimal balance for a healthy immunes system is about 85 percent of “good” bacteria and about 15 percent of “bad” bacteria. Unfortunately, most people do not have this type of harmony of bacteria in their bodies.

Many factors such as antibiotics, stress, age, diet, second-hand antibiotics found in our foods and sugar can kill the probiotics found in our bodies while allowing the opportunist “bad” bacteria to take over and create an imbalance in our digestion.

In order to create a balance of bacteria in our bodies and have a healthy digestion and immune system, it is recommended to eat foods or use products that contain probiotics in them. Adding fermented foods to your diet can help boost your probiotics.
